Chromax, a notable steel from Takefu Special Steel, is heat treated to 62-63 HRC for excellent edge retention. This semi-stainless steel doesn’t rust like carbon steels but stains unlike standard stainless options. It forms a light patina without serious rust risk. Similar to VG1 (American equivalent: A2 tool steel), Chromax offers better durability than powdered steel and superior rust resistance compared to carbon steel at a competitive price point.
Composed of 5% chromium, 1% carbon, 0.9% manganese, 1.2% molybdenum, and 0.5% vanadium, the even distribution of fine carbides make it easier to sharpen than regular stainless steel. The chromium and molybdenum content enhances rust and heat resistance while ensuring optimal hardness regardless of cooling method during production.
