These stones are mined from Atago Mountain (Yama), which is recognized to produce large clean whetstones. They are generally very consistent even in larger stones. Atagoyama stones are "Ball stones" which means they are cut from one larger strata rather than multiple layers, giving them consistency as you wear them down. Typically these stones are considered "Shiage Toishi" or pre-polishing stones, leaving a hazy kasumi when polishing and a fine but toothy edge for finish sharpening.
Approximate grit: 6000-8000
(Natural stones are all unique and vary in grit, hardness, cutting power and feedback. We do our best to describe them accurately, but variations make hard to give them an analogous grit rating)
Due to limited supply and unique nature of natural stones, there are no returns or exchanges.
The type of stone will refer to the overall size and weight of the stone. A smaller number will refer to a larger stone.
(Historically this was in reference to how many stones one could carry at a time. The larger the stone the less of them one could carry.)
